George Gershwin, like today 82 years ago …

On July 11th, 82 years have passed since the departure of George Gershwin, one of the most important American composers of the twentieth century and one of the symphonic jazz makers. Jacob GershoWitz, as he had originally named, was born on September 26, 1898 in New York. He was the son of a Jewish Jewish immigrant couple, Morris Gershovitz and Rose Bruskin. As a child, he first heard live  jazz music at the age of six. In 1910, parents bought a piano for his older brother, Israel, but Jacob was the one who used this piano playing “with the ear” and featuring a talent outside the ordinary. In the adolescent years he received music lessons from an important pedagogue to Charles Hambitzer, who taught the technique of interpretation and by Rubin Goldmark, who was also his composer’s pedagogue. In this period he also worked in the field of music publishing.
