Congratulations to a close friend of Albanian music
Hundreds of monographs can be written about our Albanian music, dozens of books of Albanian Music History can be written but none will be remembered for some of the close, loving and needed figures of this history who have given a great help standing behind the curtain.
One of these figures that we should be grateful with respect and love is the Greek musicologist George Leotsakos. He uses to live in Athens passionately following Albanian music developments. We find out that recently Mr. Leotsakos fullfilled a 1000-page monograph on Greek composer Spiro Samara (1861 – 1916) and a 700-page Autobiography of his life.
Leotsakos first arrived in Albania in the early 80’s being invited by the Albanian League of Writers and Artists. He was in contact with almost all the distinguished Albanian composers. Equipped with a wide knowledge of contemporary professional methodologies, he use to have an astonishing way of memorizing works and scrupulousness method of tracking every composer and every work he listened to. Gradually Mr. Leostakos became one of the best connoisseurs and evaluators of our music.
Leotsakos deposited this knowledge in the encyclopedias he collaborated and with one of the most popular being the English Encyclopedia “The New Grove Dictionary of Music & Musicians”. In this encyclopedia Leotsakos has written of almost all our important composers with a complete list of their works and professional descriptions from the perspective of a good connoisseur of European Contemporary music.
In addition, since the begining Leotsakos has been a good and sincere friend to almost all Albanian composers. He naturally entered their homes and remained a loving and sincere friend with them. This year he will celebrate his 85th birthday. At the beginning of this year we wish to our friend: A happy and long life, full of creativity and welcome back in Albania.
